Comparing Numbers Unit

The Comparing Numbers Unit involves understanding the relative position and magnitude of whole numbers, and their relationships within the numeration system. Students will answer questions such as:

  • Which group has more? Less?
  • Do any groups have the same number? How do you know?
  • How can you make this group more than this group?
  • How does a number line show which number is less?

Number Concepts and Place Value Unit

The Number Concepts and Place Value Unit involves understanding the relative positions of numbers in our the numeration system and that numbers can be used to name groups of objects in order to answer questions such as:

  • How can you use numbers to show how many marbles are in this jar?
  • How could you use base-10 blocks to show what the numerals in this number mean?
  • What other way(s) can you use tens and ones to show this number without changing its value?

Students determine if two boys have the same amount of apples and oranges.

Students determine if Ben and Jill have the same amount of ladybugs and crickets in their jars.

Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <.

Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.
