Kindergarten - Comparing Numbers Unit

The Comparing Numbers Unit involves understanding the relative position and magnitude of whole numbers, and their relationships within the numeration system. Students will answer questions such as—

  • How do you know which group has more? How do you know which group has less?
  • Do any groups have the same number? How do you know?

Math Concepts and Skills: 

The student compares whole numbers and understands relationships within the numeration system.

The student:

  • creates a set using objects and pictures that represents a number that is more than, less than, or equal to a given number up to 20.
  • generates a number that is one more than or one less than another number up to 20.
  • uses comparative language to describe groups of objects up to at least 20 in each group.
  • uses comparative language to describe two numbers up to 20 presented in written form.

Students determine if Ted and Rey have the same number of fish in their fish tanks.

Students determine if Gwen and Kate have the same number of pebbles in their hands.

Students determine if there are the same amount of insects in two jars.

Students determine if Dana and Aisha picked the same number of dandelions.
