The Understanding Fractions Unit involves representing fractional parts of whole objects, lines, and sets in order to answer questions such as:
- How does knowing what one whole is help to identify fractional parts?
- If you know one of the fractional parts, how can you figure out what the whole is? How many fractional parts does it take to equal one whole?
- What models can be used to represent the meaning of the numerator and the meaning of the denominator?
- How can you prove that the greater the denominator, the smaller the fractional part and the smaller the denominator, the greater the fractional part?
Summative Assessment Task
Students determine the fractional value and fair price of pattern block shaped cookies sold at the school fundraiser.
Students determine how to cut a waffle so that each friend receives and equal share of each waffle.
Instructional Tasks/Formative Assessments
Students determine how long it will take Sally to eat her cookie cake.
Students determine if fudge has been cut into four equal shares.
Students compare fractional amounts of pie that has been eaten by two friends.
Students determine fractional values and fair prices for pattern block shaped pins.
By drawing lines between vertices, students determine if a pattern block can be divided into fourths.
Students use math tools to show the fraction one-fourth on paper.
The N/A classification refers to TEKS Standards that cannot be assessed through problem solving.
For this reason, tasks have not been included for these particular standards.
