Grade 5 - Operations With Whole Numbers Unit

The Operations with Whole Numbers Unit involves using patterns and place value to apply strategies to perform all four operations with whole numbers. Questions to answer may include:

  • How are the properties of place value (additive, multiplicative, base-ten & positional) useful in applying efficient procedures for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers?
  • How can mental math, rounding, and/or the use of compatible numbers help to determine whether a solution is reasonable?
  • How does an expression differ from an equation?

Math Concepts and Skills:

The student develops and uses strategies for whole number computation in order to solve problems.

The student is expected to:

  • estimate to determine solutions to both mathematical and real-world problems involving the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
  • multiply a three-digit number by a two-digit number.
  • solve problems involving quotients of up to a four-digit dividend by a two-digit divisor using a variety of strategies.

The student uses expressions and equations.

The student is expected to:

  • represent and solve multi-step problems involving the four operations with whole numbers using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.
