Grade 5 - Geometry Unit
The Geometry Unit involves analyzing the defining properties of 2-dimensional shapes in order to answer questions such as:
- What are the relationships between the sides of this shape?
- How are these relationships used to define the shape?
Math Concepts and Skills:
The student classifies two-dimensional figures by critical attributes. The student is expected to classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy of sets and subsets using graphic organizers based on their properties such as:
IF all rectangles have opposite sides that are parallel and IF all parallelograms have opposite sides that are parallel; THEN, every rectangle is a parallelogram.
Summative Assessment Task
Given a set of directions, students draw a geometry clock and various line segments to create shapes to satisfy a given set of directions.
Instructional Tasks/Formative Assessments
Students interpret clues to determine the eight shapes that Olivia asks her classmates to draw.
Students use geometry pictures cards and category cards to complete a chart of two-dimensional geometric figures.
Students organize geometric shape terms in a hierarchy based on properties.
Students use tangram shapes and math clues to solve three tangram challenges to create new shapes.
