Grade 3 - Addition and Subtraction Unit
The Addition and Subtraction Unit involves identifying situations in the world outside the classroom in which each operation may be used to solve problems. Questions to answer may include:
- How do addition situations differ from subtraction situations?
- How are the operations of addition and subtraction related?
- How can mental math, rounding, and/or the use of compatible numbers help to determine whether the solution to an addition or subtraction problem makes sense?
- Given an addition or subtraction equation, how can you create a situation to match it?
Math Concepts and Skills:
The student develops and uses strategies for adding and subtracting whole numbers in order to solve problems.
The student:
- creates and solves one-step and two-step problems involving addition and subtraction within 1,000 using a variety of strategies.
- estimates solutions to addition and subtraction problems by rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 or by using compatible numbers.
- determines the value of a collection of coins and bills.
Summative Assessment Task
Students determine how many extra snack bars are given to a teacher for snack.
Instructional Tasks/Formative Assessments
Students determine if there are fewer students in grade 4 than in grade 3 at Elmwood School.
Students determine how many stickers are shared between two children so both end up with the same amount.
Students determine how far Uncle Bill drives on the family car trip.
Given various point totals for a beanbag toss game, students determine how Valeria and Ethan each reached their total score.
