The Problem Solving with Money Unit involves knowing the relationship between U.S. coins, how to use skip counting and other methods to find the value of a collection of coins, and answer questions such as:

  • If you have saved 23ยข and you know a toy costs $0.50, how can you figure out how much more you need to save to buy the toy?
  • If you have a bank containing coins worth thirty cents and put a quarter in your bank every week, how much money will you have in three months?
  • Why is it important to use a dollar sign and decimal point correctly when writing money in your work?

Math Concepts and Skills: 

The student applies an understanding of the relationship among the value of coins in order to solve problems.

The student:

  • finds the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar.
  • uses the cent symbol or the dollar sign and decimal point to describe the value of a collection of coins.
