Grade 1 - Comparing Numbers Unit
The Comparing Numbers Unit involves understanding the relative position and magnitude of whole numbers, and their relationships within the numeration system. Students will answer questions such as—
- Which group has more? Less?
- Do any groups have the same number? How do you know?
- How can you make this group less than this group?
- How does a number line show which number is less or which number is more?
Math Concepts and Skills:
The student compares whole numbers and understands place value relationships.
The student:
- generates a number that is greater than or less than a given number up to 120.
- uses comparative language and an understanding of place value to compare whole numbers up to 120.
- orders whole numbers up to 120 using place value and number lines.
- shows the comparison of two numbers using the symbols >, <, or =.
Summative Assessment Task
Using a given non-standard unit of measurement, students determine which of two ways to walk to school is the shortest.
Instructional Tasks/Formative Assessments
Students determine which child's name is worth more points in a math game.
Students determine which of two years Bella recorded seeing more butterflies in her yard.
Students use place value to determine whether or not two numbers are equal.
Students determine whether or not Peyton read more than the 97 pages she read last week.
