Grade 2 - Multiplication and Division Unit

The Multiplication and Division Unit involves understanding multiplication situations in which equal groups are joined and division situations in which a whole is separated into fair shares or equal groups. Question to answer may involve:

  • If I know the number of equal parts and the number in each part, how can I find the whole?
  • If I know the whole and the number of equal parts, how can I find the number in each part?
  • If I know the whole and the number in each part, how can I find the number of equal parts?
  • What arrays do you see?
  • What pattern are you noticing in your array?
  • How can you create an equation for your array?

Math Concepts and Skills:

The student connects repeated addition and repeated subtraction to multiplication and division situations that involve equal groups and shares. The student:

  • creates, describes and models multiplication situations in which equivalent sets of objects are joined.
  • creates, describes and models division situations in which a set of objects is separated into equivalent shares.
  • creates, describes and models multiplication and division situations involving arrays.
