Grade 1 - Fractions Unit
The Fraction Unit involves an introduction to fractions as equal parts of a whole in order to answer questions such as:
- How can you tell that this circle has been split into halves?
- Why has this square NOT been split into fourths?
- How will you share this cookie with a classmate and make sure that each of you gets a fair share? What is each share called?
- How do you know these are equal parts?
- Why is it important to find equal parts of a whole?
- What do equal shares/parts look like in your shape?
- What is the difference between whole, halves, fourths?
Math Concepts and Skills:
The student analyzes attributes of two-dimensional shapes that enable them to be partitioned into equal parts.
The student:
- partitions two-dimensional figures (such as circles and rectangles) into two or four equal parts and uses words to describe the parts such as halves, half of, fourths, or quarters.
- identifies examples and non-examples of halves and fourths.
Summative Assessment Task
Students determine how four friends can each have an equal share of a rectangular pizza.
Instructional Tasks/Formative Assessments
Students determine if there will be any snack bar left if two friends each eat half of the snack bar.
Students show what Lucy's circle looks like if she colors half the circle red and half the circle blue.
Students determine where Mandy should draw lines on a piece of wood so her mom can cut the wood into fourths.
Students determine if all the glass rectangles in a window have been washed.
