Kindergarten - Counting and Cardinality Unit
The Counting and Cardinality Unit involves understanding numbers and how they are used to name quantities and to answer questions, such as—
- How many balls is the clown juggling?
- Do you have enough cups for each member of your group to have one?
- How do you know how many objects you have?
Math Concepts and Skills:
The student represents whole numbers and understands relationships in the numeration system.
The student:
- counts forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects.
- reads, writes, and represents whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures.
- counts a set of objects up to at least 20 and indicates that the last number said tells the number of objects in the group regardless of their arrangement or order.
- knows instantly without counting the quantity of a small group of objects in organized and random arrangements.
Summative Assessment Task
Students count to determine the number of raisin eyes needed for six gingerbread men.
Instructional Tasks/Formative Assessments
Students determine the number of bunnies, given the number of bunny ears.
Students determine the total number of balloons at a party if there are five friends and each friend has two balloons.
Students determine the total number of bicycle tires on four bicycles.
Students count to answer how many sneakers are worn by four friends.
