Grade 5 - Coordinate Plane Unit
The Coordinate Plane Unit provides the introduction to identifying locations on a coordinate plane. Questions to answer may include:
- How is a coordinate grid used to find a specific location in 2-dimensional space?
- What is the “first quadrant of the coordinate plane”? If there is a “first quadrant”, are there also second, third, and fourth quadrants? If so, how are they defined? How are they used to locate points?
Math Concepts and Skills:
The student identifies locations on a coordinate plane.
The student is expected to:
- describe the critical characteristics of the coordinate plane:
- axes that are perpendicular number lines;
- origins that coincide with zero on each number lines and the point (0,0);
- the x-coordinate that indicates movement parallel to the x-axis starting at the origin; and
- the y-coordinate that indicates movement parallel to the y-axis starting at the origin.
- explain how to graph ordered pairs of numbers in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.
- graph ordered pairs of numbers arising from both mathematical and real-world problems, such as those generated by number patterns in an input-output table.
Summative Assessment Task
Students graph points on a coordinate plane to show four locations on Rick's cattle ranch where herds of cattle can eat the most grass by a river.
Instructional Tasks/Formative Assessments
Students graph points on a coordinate plane to plot a starting point, three restaurant locations and an ending point. Students also determine the total distance Mr. and Mrs. Hunter travel in three days to eat dinner and return home.
Students will graph points on a coordinate plane to determine the path Mrs. Rizzo took around the mall, and how she can get back to the coffee shop, where she started her trip.
Students plot points on a grid to determine the geometric shapes that can be made by connecting the points.
Students graph points in a coordinate plane to show the coordinates of four vertices of a soccer field. Students also determine how many meters of fencing are needed to fence in the soccer field.
