Dividing with Fractions Unit

The Dividing with Fractions Unit develops meaning for situations involving dividing a whole number by a unit fraction and dividing a unit fraction by a whole number. Questions to answer may include:

  • How do questions asked when dividing whole numbers provide meaning for situations involving division with fractions?
  • Examples:

Adding and Subtracting Fractions Unit

The Adding and Subtracting Fractions Unit involves using a variety of methods to join or separate parts referring to the same whole. Methods may include replacing mixed numbers with equivalent fractions; using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction; and using visual models of fractions. Questions to answer may include:

Students determine how many miles a teacher rides her motorcycle to school and back home again. Students also determine if the teacher stays within her gas budget if she rides to school and back five days a week for four weeks.

Students determine which of two stores is offering the better buy on plastic plates.

Data Analysis Unit

The Data Analysis Unit involves organizing and displaying data in a variety of ways in order to answer questions such as:

  • What is the difference between discrete and continuous data? In other words, why is it OK to connect the dots on a time and temperature graph but not on a favorite color graph?
  • What is the difference between categorical and numerical data? In other words, does the order of the data matter on a favorite pizza graph? Does the order of the data matter on an age and height graph? Why or why not?

Coordinate Plane Unit

The Coordinate Plane Unit provides the introduction to identifying locations on a coordinate plane. Questions to answer may include:

  • How is a coordinate grid used to find a specific location in 2-dimensional space?
  • What is the “first quadrant of the coordinate plane”? If there is a “first quadrant”, are there also second, third, and fourth quadrants? If so, how are they defined? How are they used to locate points?

Measurement Unit

The Measurement Unit involves applying the process of measuring to quantify attributes that can be measured (length, area, volume, capacity, weight/mass and time). Questions to answer may include:

  • What is the difference between linear units, units of area, and units of volume?
  • Given a formula for finding volume, how can you create a real-world situation to match it?
  • How does knowing the relationships between units in the same measurement system help to solve real-world problems?

Grade 5 - Measurement Unit

Geometry Unit

The Geometry Unit involves analyzing the defining properties of 2-dimensional shapes in order to answer questions such as:

  • What are the relationships between the sides of this shape?
  • How are these relationships used to define the shape?

Grade 5 - Geometry Unit

Algebraic Reasoning Unit

The Algebraic Reasoning Unit involves understanding the properties of numbers, understanding and generating number patterns, and using the properties and patterns to develop meaning for expressions and equations. Questions to answer may include:

  • What is the difference between additive and multiplicative number patterns?
  • How does organizing data in a table or graph help these patterns emerge?
  • How are parentheses and brackets used to develop meaning in expressions and equations?
  • What does it mean to “simplify” an expression?

Grade 5 - Algebraic Reasoning Unit

Multiplying with Fractions Unit

The Multiplying Fractions Unit involves identifying a variety of models to represent the process of multiplying fractions in order to solve problems. Questions to answer may include:

  • How do equal jumps on a number line represent multiplication situations?
  • How do arrays and area models represent multiplication situations?
  • Given a multiplication equation, how can you create a real-life situation to match it?
